The 12th Annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice

We did it! We, the coalition between Carroll Academy, Horace Mann, & Travis Elementary marched the entire length of the Cesar Chavez March for Justice. It was easily over 2 miles from the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center to the Alamo. Luckily, it was an overcast day and not very hot either. Kudos goes out to all the participants, but particularly our kids who never complained (that I heard) about the distance. They carried their signs and our banner with great pride and an understanding why we continue.
It was very uplifting to see so many people gathering together like this. Several times throughout the march we had a great view of the sea of people who had banded together on this day. It was amazing!
Here are some of the pictures taken. I hope you enjoy them.

The banner. From left to right~ Chris (graduated from Travis), Sydney & Corina (students at Travis) Ben (father of Travis students).

Horace Mann mothers made this sign. It's who we are regardless of which school we come from.

Randle, a former Mann student, with his Che Guevera shirt has helped us every step of the way. He's awesome too!

Olivia & Nellie before the march starts.

Our children's education is not an expense it is an INVESTMENT!

Heading up towards the bridge, LOOK at all those people! What an inspiring, uplifting sight to see. And to be a part of.

Sometimes the march stopped for a bit. We'd gather and talk. Olivia, Shiela, & Nellie. Pancho, Jonathon, & Milton in the background.

We've made it all the way into downtown. Alamo, here we come!

Along the way many photographers and cameramen took their pics. This one probably had the best view.

On March 29, 2008 The Coalition (name pending) between Carroll Academy, Mann Academy, & Travis Elementary will again take to the streets in a show of solidarity against the SAISD's unfair school closures to march in the Cesar Chavez March for Justice.

Cesar Chavez graduated from the 8th grade. That's when his formal education stopped because he needed to help support his family. Despite his short formal education they say later in life education was a passion of his. As an adult he lined his office walls with hundreds of books. If Cesar Chavez lived today he would certainly be on our side!

Cesar Chavez believed that together all things are possible. Our coalition couldn't agree more. He taught many to stand up for their rights. Our coalition also wants our mothers, fathers, students to stand up for their rights. The right to be heard. The right to a just education system. Like Cesar, we march so that the SAISD will recognize the importance and dignity in our community.

"Cesar lives wherever Americans' he inspired work nonviolently for social change." ~ UFW President Arturo Rodriguez.

Francisco (a Travis student) taking a break as we stopped on the bridge.

He carries a very important message with him.

Jackie, a concerned community member, has participated in just about

everything we do. Even attending the board meeting on Feb. 25! She's great!

A cool, old school police car. Just thought it was kinda neat!

They never left that banner for the entire length of the march. What dedication!

Harley Riders in support of the Cesar Chavez March. I wish you could've heard them revving their bikes. Impressive.

One more turn and we will be able to see the Alamo. Time for one more chant.

Pancho leads us.
