THIS JUST SPOTTED ONLINE!
The headline: Substitute SAISD Teacher Arrested
The story is short and 'sweet' and disturbing.
Here it is from www.ksat.com:
POSTED: 12:39 pm CDT May 1, 2008
UPDATED: 4:02 pm CDT May 1, 2008
SAN ANTONIO -- A substitute teacher for the San Antonio Independent School District has been arrested on suspicion of sexual misconduct with a child.
The incident allegedly happened two years ago, a district spokesman said.
The teacher, whose name has not been released is no longer working for the school.
EDITOR'S NOTE: A previous version of this story said the alleged incident happened at a school campus. District officials did not release the information. KSAT.com regrets and apologizes for the error.

Why doesn't the district name the school or the teacher? I'm sure many parents would like to know if their child had come into contact with this alleged pedophile.
In a story just posted online (May 2, 12:22am) a South San ISD ex-principal is named. The street he lives on is even mentioned. The campuses the incidents allegedly took place were also disclosed. You can read the story here.

SAISD & "Safety" at Carroll Academy
The question "Is this part of Duron's respecting the community?" was emailed to several Coalition members in regards to the abandoned school bus that had been on the property next door to Carroll Academy for MONTHS.
The bus is not only an eyesore but a danger to the community and the school children of Carroll Academy. It would seem that this bus had become a haven for some homeless judging by the mattresses and blankets found inside the bus. Razor blades, undoubtedly used for drugs, were also found in the bus. According to the news report the district didn't know about this bus. They claim they had only one complaint months ago. Reportedly, there had been other buses on the same property but had been removed by the district. Why was there no follow-up on this lone bus? One more example of how things 'work' at SAISD?

SAISD Board President Resigns April 28, 2008
Julian Trevino resigned as SAISD board president & trustee at Monday night's board meeting. Regrettably our videographer was home sick and did not catch his resignation speech on camera. You can read the story that the Express-News' Michelle De La Rosa wrote here.

Guerilla Protest at the "White Rose Induction Ceremony" for SAISD's Young Women's Leadership Academy on Wed. May 21.

Horace Mann's Fine Arts Charter Academy will be closing at the end of this school year so that the SAISD can open it's new Young Women's Leadership Academy in Fall of 2008.

The school district chose to displace 520 middle school young men and women in order to house a mere 150 girls. Only girls. That's right, no boys allowed! We believe this to be a Title IX violation and will pursue this avenue to the very end.

In the meantime, we have tried to get the school board to listen. We have tried to engage the Superintendent in some meaningful dialogue. All to no avail. We've received nothing but feigned sympathy. Our requests, and in some instances, our demands have fallen on deaf ears. Therefore we have no choice but to amp it up. This protest is the most recent of our efforts.

Check out what three brave young women did for the cause. You will want to watch the entire 3.5 minutes. You will see adults heckle the girls. You will see the SAISD videographer attempt to block us and our camera out of the view of the attending crowd. You will see the SAISD police escort threee young girls off the premises of a PUBLIC high school.

Way to go SAISD. You must be so proud of yourselves.

First You Take Schools Now You Take Libraries
Updated April 23, 2008
We found out on Thursday April 17 that Mann & Travis libraries were no longer allowing students to check out books for the remainder of the year and all books that were checked out needed to be returned. The end of hte school year was nearly 8 weeks away!
Let's clarify that the schools said the libraries were still open. By open they mean that the 'room' was still available for students to enter but they would not be allowed to check out any books nor pick a book up and read it at a table IN the library.
Friday afternoon it was confirmed this was true at Travis Elementary. Emails were sent to the board members as well as the local media over the weekend.
Monday morning this is what was found in the library:
Books removed and stacked on empty shelves.

Books stacked on tables and chairs. Empty shelves can clearly be seen in the background.

Stacked bookshelves had signs that read "Do Not Touch Books". We would've liked to have had that picture.
On Thursday evening at Twain Middle School Olga Hernandez was told about the libraries. She said she would check into the situation. She was also the only trustee that responded to our email. We did hear from a Mann parent that Tom Lopez was also checking into the libraries.
The story was picked up by Sylvia Rincon of Fox 29 News and Jesse Degollardo of KSAT 12. Both stations interviewed Michelle Reyes about what she had found when she went to investigate further on Monday morning. You can read a short commentary and view the video from KSAT 12 here.
Later that afternoon it was reported to us that school libraries were back in full service. We are very happy to be able to report that students were taken back to the library on Tuesday where they were allowed to check out books! She's one happy little girl with her "High School Musical" book.

What we are not happy about is the way the school district chose to comment on the situation. They referred to it as a misunderstanding. The put it on our schools and our librarians. Pass the buck. Cover my, well ~ you know.
We don't believe the trustees knew about the library situation. We don't even believe that the superintendent knew or gave the instruction for school libraries to cease serving our students. But we are convinced that the 'order' came from somewhere in the SAISD central offices. The school and the librarians were strictly following a directive from staff in the school district. We would've rather seen the SAISD take responsibility for a bad decision.
